Special Opportunity Grants Application Process:

(Step 1 and Step 2 have to be both completed)

Step 1:

Submit a request letter electronically, in the form of a Microsoft Word document with a .doc extension, to: grants@freshwaterfuture.org. When communicating with Freshwater Future via e-mail, please include your organization's name in the message, as well as complete contact information for the project coordinator.

The request letter shall be no longer than one page (front and back) and shall include the following information:

  • Organization name and address of applicant, including phone, fax, and e-mail numbers and addresses;
  • Organizational annual budget;
  • Project coordinator or contact person;
  • Amount of funding requested;
  • Why the applicant qualifies as a grassroots initiative;
  • Statement of need;
  • The goal of the project;
  • Why the project is not compatible with the standard grant application process (Spring and Fall grant cycles);
  • Specific activities or costs to be covered;
  • Timeline for activities and expenditures; and
  • How the activities are consistent with Freshwater Future purpose, methods, program areas, and criteria; and
  • Documentation of status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or a registered charity. Please submit this as a scanned .jpg image (or in another standard format) with the request letter attached to your email. If necessary, send a hard copy to Gina Middaugh, Freshwater Future SOG, PO Box 2479, Petoskey, MI 49770.

For applicants that require a sponsor, please provide the following additional information:

  • Name, address, phone number, and e-mail address of sponsor, including contact person, in the body of request letter;
  • Documentation that sponsor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group or a registered charity; and
  • Letter from sponsor on sponsor's letterhead expressing support for applicant's proposed project and willingness to act as fiscal agent.

Freshwater Future builds effective community-based citizen action to protect and restore the water quality of the Great Lakes basin. We work toward this goal by providing financial assistance, communications and networking assistance and technical assistance to citizens and grassroots watershed groups throughout the Great Lakes basin. Through these efforts we work with over 1,800 grassroots watershed groups and citizens to protect and restore the rivers, lakes and wetlands in their communities. Freshwater Future, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
