Protecting Watersheds of the Upper Peninsula and Great Lakes Basin Through Outreach and Education
Spring Project Grant Award: $2200
Project Summary:

Save the Wild UP (SWUP) understands that it is absolutely necessary reach out to citizens of the Lower Peninsula concerning the No. 1 threat to western Upper Peninsula watersheds - the potential development of an unsustainable metallic sulfide mining district spanning several counties. To this end, SWUP has begun collaborating with downstate environmental, student and service groups and public speakers through informational/educational presentations and workshops. These efforts have already inspired citizens to organize new groups, such as Grand Rapids Against the Sulfide Mine and Great Lakes Health and Environment Action League (HEAL), Citizens of Iron River. Grant monies will be used to continue this outreach by funding travel, printing, mailings, advertising and facility fees. The project will connect new future advocates not yet familiar with the challenge and provide them with the opportunity to actively participate in letter writing, distribution of information, and organizing new groups.
